New Ink and Mixing Two Patterns

If a great-grandmother sees my pattern combination in my outfit, she will probably raise an eyebrow and criticize me from heaven and beyond. I remember when I was little I was told, “Black does not go with brown, you can not mix two patterns, choose 1 pattern and combine it with 1 simple plain color.” The truth is, I chose to ignore that. Not because of my stubbornness. But because I’ve always liked to wear what I want, no matter what they think of me or my outfit. I am not saying that I always make the best decisions. Obviously, I have seen old pictures and I have thought, “Anette what were you thinking with that outfit”. But in conclusion, I’ve always been a bit of a rebel in my style (and in other things as well).

Flowers and Lines. I did not even think about it. I just saw it in my closet and I visualized it in myself and I liked it. There are times where different patterns DO GO TOGETHER and they look SO GOOD. There are other times where pattern combinations do not look so good because they look FORCED. The key here (my opinion) is; Focus more on the colors and the type of fabric you are combining than on the pattern itself. In this case, I combined 2 very different patterns and I loved the result.

TIP: Separate clothing that has patterns in your closet or over your bed. Observe the design of the garment, observe the design of the pattern (lines, tiny flowers, huge flowers, animals, geometric figures), feel and observe the type of fabric (satin, cotton, lycra, etc.) and observe the colors of the clothing that you chose.
Now, try to assemble your outfit focusing on the colors you want to use. If you are not 100% convinced, change one piece for another until you feel that the combination visually flows.

Don’t be afraid to experiment, don’t be afraid to go with your intuition. Get out of the box and try that thing that you have in mind.
